In his Black Book, Robert Welch, founder of

the John Birch Society, argued that President

Dwight Eisenhower was a "conscious, articulate

instrument of the Communist conspiracy."

That may sound extreme, but compared to today's

bloodthirsty neoconservative louts, Mr. Welch was

a gentleman and a scholar.
