In 2012, Ted Cruz got 631,812 votes (or less than 4% of the eligible voting population) in the Republican primary runoff with David Dewhurst to effectively win a U. S. Senate seat that represents 26.97 million people. In the general election that fall, Cruz received 4,456,599 votes from 13,646,226 registered voters. That's about 33%. So not that many Texans like Ted enough to vote for him.
