But, that ass was trying very hard to do a good thing and got whipped for it. This is not an ass it is a jackass.
(I used to sell a book called Asses Vs Jackasses by a Judge) The asses were the hard working and patient (and intelligent) donkeys.

In the Unexpurgated Bible, Balaam's Ass will be called Balaam's Jackass.
