"I hate the sin, but I love the sinner," says Governor
Perry. You hear Christian evangelicals say this all
the time. You might even think they're quoting Jesus.
But Jesus was way too smart to say anything this
dumb. We externalize who we are by what we
do. If you hate what someone does, say, Newt
Gingrich cheating on one of his wives, you
aren't just hating Newt's sin; you are hating
Newt the sinner. 'Hate the sin, love the
sinner', therefore, is just a disguise hate
wears when it pretends to be love.
