If NSA surveillance is so darned effective in foiling
terrorist plots, why are leaders of the House and
Senate intelligence committees saying "Americans
shouldn't feel safer today than they did before
the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks"?

I'll tell you why. It's because we tell ourselves these fairy tales about all the high tech, space age things we are capable of doing (Star Trek command bridge anyone?)and it's all bullshit.
How can they justify huge appropriations for all that shit if we aren't scared?
I guess we could be scared if we spend all that money, lose our right to privacy, and still aren't safe(r).
