then, seemingly overnight, they became 'Corny Capitalists'.

Reminds me of the old joke about blowjobs:

She: "Would you like a blowjob, sir?"
He: "Yes, ma'am, I would." She: "OK, here goes" (and then she starts blowing on his knob).
